Brown-RISD Hillel seeks a Rabbi / Director of Religious Life to work closely with the Executive Director, students, staff, and the Board of Trustees in building and sustaining a meaningful, vibrant, and pluralistic Jewish campus community.

Specifically, the Rabbi serves as the primary rabbinical authority of Hillel and oversees all aspects of Hillel programming. The Rabbi is responsible for overseeing Hillel's programmatic staff, providing formal and informal Jewish educational opportunities, advising student leadership, and offering an informed perspective on issues of Jewish law. The Rabbi will also serve as an Associate Chaplain of Brown University with requisite duties that are defined by the University Chaplain.*

The Rabbi reports to the Brown Hillel Board of Trustees. He/she will also be a formal employee of Brown University and report to the Chaplain of the University.

The position requires a proven track record of professional success, with training and experience in Jewish culture and values, Jewish campus leadership, and organizational development. A Rabbinical degree is required, and a minimum of 5 years of prior professional experience is preferred. Salary is commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package offered.

Rabbi / Director of Jewish Life Responsibilities

Develop, articulate, and promote a vibrant vision for Jewish student life.
The Rabbi will work closely with the Executive Director to establish annual goals that support development and growth in the Brown-RISD Jewish community. Those goals will include enhancing the experiences of students already involved as well as reaching out to the uninvolved. To do this, the Rabbi will collaborate with student leadership, particularly the student executive board. He/she will also create mechanisms for program evaluation and assessment.

Provide Rabbinic/ spiritual leadership
The Rabbi will act as the "chief Jewish educator" on campus, providing insight, advice, and advocacy about issues related to Judaism. He/she will be an active participant in Shabbat and holiday observance on campus, offer pastoral counseling to members of the University community, and coordinate Hillel's Shabbat and Kashrut policy in consultation with students. The Rabbi will also represent the Jewish community to University faculty and administration in response to relevant events that impact Jewish students.

Supervise all programming
The Rabbi will work with the Executive Director, programming staff, and student leadership to ensure proper implementation of Hillel?s annual programmatic mission and goals. He/she will develop the experiences of involved students while still looking to engage the uninvolved. The Rabbi will also create mechanisms for program evaluation. He/she will monitor the performance of programming staff and create opportunities for their ongoing professional development.

Encourage student participation and leadership
The Rabbi will engage students on a personal level, making them feel comfortable with all that Hillel offers. He/she will also inspire students to seek and maintain leadership positions, and serve as a programmatic resource to those in leadership roles.

Understand and advance religious pluralism
The Rabbi will encourage and promote a pluralistic approach to religious expression. He/she will foster an appreciation of the richness and diversity of the Jewish perspective and seek to involve the broadest possible cross-section of the Brown-RISD Jewish population in Hillel activities.

*The duties of the Associate Chaplain are defined by the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life and will be available shortly.
